Perfection is the Enemy of the Good alternates quotes from two books that share a name: Art & Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland, an encouraging self-help book for artists, and Art and Fear by Paul Virilio, a theoretical rant on politics and aesthetics in 20th century art. The dueling sentiments mirror my own process of making work.
Presented as a performance at Kunsthalle Galapagos in Brooklyn, each time one quote ended and the next began, I flipped a cassette tape in a handheld cassette player as fast as possible, amplified through a microphone — one side 17 Seconds by The Cure, the other side Faith. A standalone version, with audio from two generative music apps, was included in The Last Brucennial.
