Two projects bridging San Francisco, San Francesco, and St. Francis

Two projects made for a month-long residency with Allan Kaprow at the CSAV Artists Research Laboratory, Fondazione Antonio Ratti, Como, Italy.

Eight Views of the Golden Gate Bridge (1997, silk, dimensions variable) During the residency, meeting daily in the ex-church of San Francesco, I realized for the first time that my birthplace — San Francisco — was named for the monk St. Francis. For the group exhibition in that same church, I constructed soft fabric views of the Golden Gate Bridge from silk scraps provided by the Fondazione, based on postcards I had brought along.

SF, SF, SF (San Francesco, San Francisco, St. Francis — 1998, performance, video 40 sec., camera: Charles Gute) Back in San Francisco, I dressed as St. Francis and visited tourist sites — the Golden Gate Bridge, North Beach — being kind to any animals I encountered. In the spirit of cultural exchange, stills from the video were sent to an exhibition at Viafarini Gallery in Milan.
